Ofer Lapid
Ofer Lapid - A Driving Force in the SA Events Industry
The third recipient of the TPSA lifetime achievement award, Ofer Lapid is not someone to be taken lightly. His passion for the Events industry is evident to anyone who has worked with him. It is also the driving force, which has given him the ''chutzpah" to take on any challenge that this fickle industry can come up with at a moments notice: A vital ingredient for the success of his business.
Ofer's first encounter with the industry was as a thirteen year old boy growing up in Tel Aviv. His home was next door to the City Hall and he was fascinated with all the staging equipment coming and going for the events there. It was not long before he started helping out backstage and began to learn about lighting. He eventually left school to work on gigs with Israeli Rock 'n' Roll bands as a lighting technician. He volunteered for the Israeli Navy in 1978 and served four years as a non-commissioned officer, finally achieving the rank of Sergeant major and taking part in the Lebanon war: Still taking on lighting gigs during his leave. In 1983, he started touring with Israeli bands for Jewish communities around the world and in between tours he worked on theatre and opera productions, both locally and internationally.
Lighting Unlimited
In 1985, one of the band tours brought him to South Africa and he stayed on to tour the country with Juluka. At the end of that year, he joined the State Theatre as a lighting technician, moving to Sun City the following year to work as a lighting technician and board operator on the extravaganza production playing in the theatre. By 1987 he had opened his own company, Lighting Unlimited, specializing in lighting design and consultancy. In those days, the company was housed in an old 150 metre warehouse situated behind Ellis Park Stadium. Apart from providing the show lighting for productions around South Africa and other African countries, Lighting Unlimited began providing its services to the movie industry, with Ofer performing the duties of Junior Electrician, Best Boy and Gaffer. Lighting Unlimited imported its first shipment of lighting gear in 1991 causing quite a stir in the industry. In the year that followed he launched Stage Design, a company dedicated to stage construction.
Gearhouse South Africa
One year later, the company Woza Power was born to provide power generators for the growing demand of indoor and outdoor events. By this time, Ofer had moved his operation into the 11 500m˛ building where its headquarters resides today. When the Gearhouse Group offered to buy the business four years later, Gearhouse South Africa was created and Ofer became Managing Director of the largest supplier of technical production equipment in the country. In a bold move at the time when Gearhouse PLC in the UK went into receivership, Ofer formed a management team, which bought back the South African division from the parent company. Gearhouse SA is now a wholly South African owned company, with branches in Cape Town and Durban and a stack of international events to its credit, which continues to grow and diversify.

Simon Oates
I am unsure as to when I started in this Industry.................. around 1971/2 in a band, but of course needed to take ridiculous amounts of hallucinogenics to bypass 70s music. Yup! Had to do the same in the 80's.
Simon after relieving himself of band duties started in the Prosound hire department and worked his way to being a director of Prosound.
Simon left Prosound to start his own company TADCO.
Simon has assisted many young up and coming staging companys with advise, support and friendship.
Somehow grew a little bit of brain long since gone, probably was never there considering I won The Weakest Link in a Sudden Death shoot out with half an amoeba that had been liquidised.
If you can figure out from this when I started please let me know.
Achievements are simply working with Tadco staff, clients, friends and suppliers.............and of course my family who still say "Hi" once a year!!!!!!!!!!!!
